Wow, so I just looked through my old posts, and I haven't written one in about two and a half years. And the worst part is that I just realized that I actually had a lot to write about in the past year and a half since I moved to New York. But that's for another post. Right now, I want to talk to you about the wonderful world of home automation.
Now, I'm sure I'm a few years late on the bandwagon, but this whole Internet-of-Things thingy is da bomb. I used to see advertisements for smart TVs — smart refrigerators even — and think to myself, Why the fuck does my refrigerator need to connect to the internet? Boy, let me tell you. Why not?
While I don't currently own a smart refrigerator or even a smart TV, I do have this little plug that connects to Wi-Fi. Yes, a plug. I plug it into the wall, and then I plug whatever appliance I want into that plug.
Then after a somewhat frustrating setup experience, I connect the plug to an app on my smartphone and, hey presto!, I can now switch off my lights from my bed without having to get up. This blog post may have started out as a way for me to share my excitement at that fact, but honestly, I've started to appreciate how huge IoT is going to be in a few years. (Not that it already isn't. Still not mainstream yet, though.)
